Solano Rural Defense was formed by concerned residents in response to the aggressive land purchase tactics by private interests seeking to impose their vision of sprawling urban growth in Solano County.
These same land acquisition strategies could be used throughout the country to take rural lands. For this reason, our goal is to help farmers and ranchers defend their rights, and to advocate for the preservation of rural open space and protection of farm and ranchlands to help ensure a viable food supply. Our resolve is driven by the following concerns:
Intrusive Land Acquisition: Rich investors secretly purchased over 60,000 acres in Solano County in a manner marked by secrecy and lack of community engagement which is already harming agricultural productivity and community values.
Intimidating Legal Methods: By engaging in legal actions against local farmers, who did not want to sell their land, the company employs methods that sow fear and division among residents who have tirelessly nurtured and enriched this land for generations.
Environmental and Ecological Risks: The scale of development proposed by these investors would disrupt local ecosystems and water resources, and contribute to unsustainable urban sprawl and create regional transportation nightmares.
Lack of Transparency and Accountability: These Silicon Valley investors have operated without transparency, avoiding open communication with local authorities and residents, leading to distrust and uncertainty within our community.
